GIS Capacity Building

Unlock your GI value

Investing in effective training remains an important strategy for successful businesses and public organisations. More so under today’s tough economic climate, employees are expected to be ever more productive, and frequent business reorganisation means that people are finding themselves in new roles that comes with access to new business systems or technologies that they don’t know how to use.

Organisations looking to embark on new IT expansion programmes involving GI technology may have a lot to gain from equipping their senior ICT managers and decisions makers with the relevant knowledge of GIS best practices.

Being a dynamic industry, both in terms of GIS software evolution as well as in the development of integration modes and protocols with mainstream IT platforms, GI practitioners also often find themselves having to continuously retrain to keep up with technology standards and trends.

A couple of days of tailored training at Tropical Geographics can help you gain the skills to advance your career or to maximise the benefits from your GIS investment.

Our Approach to Training

  • Our training programme is designed to provide the maximum amount of pragmatic advice and experience in the focused short courses.
  • The courses are based around real case studies that ensure maximum interactivity and seek to optimise opportunities for gaining from the knowledge of not only the tutors but also other students.
  • Off Site or On Site. We run regular scheduled courses at our facilities, but if so preferred we can arrange for bespoke training at on our client’s premises.
  • Our courses are designed to be flexible. Training is delivered in one-day chunks. You can learn at your own pace, with a day this month and a day next, or do it all in one go if that suits you better (e.g. if you're travelling a long way).
  • Accreditation. Our trainers are accredited on the different platforms as appropriate, and each trainee is awarded a certificate in recognition of the completion of the course.

Our Training Courses

GIS Data and Applications

We provide specialised training in the usage of number of spatial data sets and GIS software, including specific application areas e.g. GIS in Oil & Gas Management. We also train users on how to develop extensions or automate tasks with the GIS products’ programming interfaces.

Building a GIS Investment Business Case

GI projects are often dogged by the inability to gain the attention of the Chief Executives and establish a Return on Investment (RoI) that impresses the Chief Financial Officer. In a tough economic climate, it is particularly important that any project that requires investment can present a strong case and demonstrate real value, so as not to undermine already tight budgets.

GIS for Senior and Executive Managers

Location information is an increasingly important part of the information management infrastructure for organisations in both the private and public sectors. Location does matter, and organizations hardly operate successfully without an increasingly sophisticated set of location-based or GIS (Geographic Information System) services and applications. However, for many senior managers understanding how to harness its power is often poorly understood.

This course is designed to impart the “need to know” of GIS in business terms and provide insights into how to best exploit its potential. It equips senior level managers with the principles and techniques of GIS and location information, as well as insights on developing an effective strategy for location information management.

Managing Successful GI Development Projects

Although managing any type of IT project can be challenging, projects involving geographic information (GI) present peculiar issues and problems because of the nature of the data, processes and technology involved and the expectations of the users. This course covers the essentials of managing such projects whether for the delivery of a dedicated geo-information data or system, web-based map services or as part of an integrated and enterprise-wide platform.

Writing a GIS Call for Tender

This course equips the relevant resources in an organisation with the skills, techniques and insights in launching Call for Tenders, Request for Services, or Request for Offers for GIS project assignments. Trainees will come away with the knowledge of defining the scope, tasks, deliverables, work packages, and evaluation criteria in a clear and concise manner, and in a way that attracts meaningful offers from providers.

Opening up GI: Effective Policy Making for Geo-Information Governance

This course is tailored to the needs of personnel in leading positions in public and private sector organisations who are responsible for the formulation and appraisal of local, regional, or national policies on geo-information management. It provides a solid understanding of the fundamentals of GI technology and an overview of the best practices and trends in GI governance. Trainees will gain insight into the critical information management principles that any GI policy should seek to strengthen and promote. The course also covers the techniques of using effective policy instruments to stimulate innovation and enterprise in the geo-community.
